What is it?
The Blue Sapphire Classic is a baton competition being held at Penn State University’s Rec Hall on March 14th, 2010. The competition will be open to competitive baton twirling athletes who compete both individually and in team events. This is a one-day event, but a yearlong effort to increase the base amount of money in the David and Lori Uhazie Feature Twirler endowment. Twirling athletes and coaches will be traveling from all over to attend and compete. The event is being hosted by Penn State’s Blue Sapphire, PJ Maierhofer (2005-2009) as an effort to give back to the university and the scholarship that helped allocate some funding for her academic experience at Penn State.
This event is also a great opportunity to bring a solid baton competition to central Pennsylvania and allows for many to easily attend. The timing of the event is at the beginning of the competitive baton twirling season, so it is a great chance for twirlers to get routines on the floor before state and regional championships.
The “BSC” encourages both baton twirlers and spectators alike to come check out the event. It will be open to the public for a small fee. It hopes to attract curious Penn Staters and educate them on competitive baton twirling. It also hopes to attract baton twirling athletes and give them an opportunity to compete and explore at a university like Penn State.
